Opiates
Opioid analgesics or Opiate narcotics are drive from opium along with their synthetic relatives. Opium is dried latex of unripe capsular fruits of poppy plant, Papaver somniferum. It has a bitter taste and is smoked or eaten.
Opioids bind to specific opioid receptors present in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. They act as a drug that relieves pain by acting on CNS and are termed as analgesics or pain killers. So opiates have adverse effects.
Opiates have narcotic, analgesic, sedative, and astringent effects. The slow down respiratory activity, cause constriction of pupil of eye, decrease glandular secretions, impair the digestion, produce nausea, vomiting, and sterility.
