Describe how lipids and proteins are catabolized?
Ans) Lipid catabolism:-
Lipid catabolism is the breakdown of complex lipid molecules into glycerol and fatty acids. Lipids (phospholipids) are structurally similar to triglycerides and they are broken down primarily by releasing fatty acid chains from the three carbon glycerol backbone. The reactions breaking down triglycerides are catalyzed by lipase and those involving phospholipids are catalyzed by phaspholipases. The resulting products of lipid catabolism are glycerol and fatty acids.
Protein catabolism:-
Catabolism of protein includes the breakdown of protein into amino acids and simple derivative compounds for transport into the cell through the plasma membrane and ultimately for the polymerization into new proteins by the use of RNA and ribosomes.
