Reduction - oxidation- reaction (redox reaction) is  any chemical reaction in which the oxidation number of a participating chemical species changes.

Oxidation is loss of electrons.

Reduction is gain of electrons.

An electron acceptor is an oxidizing agent and is itself reduced during the process of redox reaction. Examples of acceptors include oxygen, nitrate, iron (III), manganese (IV), sulfate, carbon dioxide, etc.

Electron donors are ions or molecules that donate electrons and are reducing agents.
