Acetest is a trademark reagent used to detect the presence of elevated levels of ketone bodies in the patients with several metabolic disorders such as diabetes. Large amounts of ketones in the urine change the color of the tablet.
The tablet contains sodium nitroprusside, disodium phosphate, lactose, and amino acetic acid.
Acetest principle:
Ketones (Acetone or acetoacetate) in the body fluids (blood or urine) produce a purple colored complex when combined with nitroprusside in the presence of glycine.
Depending upon the quantity of ketone bodies, the color change occurs.
