Amino Acid Synthesis
a) Which amino acids can be synthesized in a single step from an alpha ketoacid or another amino acid in humans.
b) Some amino acid synthesis pathways have multiple enzymes that carry out the committed step. This is called enzyme multiplicity. What are the benefits of having enzyme multiplicity?
c) Tetrahydrofolate is a cofactor in many reactions involved in amino acid synthesis. Which molecules can be carried or transferred by tetrahydrofolate?
Answer-a: Glutamate, Proline and Arginine are derived from Alpha-keto acids.
Answer-b: Enzyme multiplicity helps in proper regulation in amino acid biosynthesis pathways, as, some genes during the course of evolution might start producing isozymes. In order to prevent this and synthesis of a particular amino acid could take place, their activity is regulated differently by feedback inhibition, so that one enzyme does not merge with the biosynthesis of some another amino acid.
Answer-c: THF acts a one-carbon donor and it also helps in transferring the methyl group in varios metabolic reaction.
