Small intestine has three sections –

Jejunum: Absorption of nutrients like sugars, fatty acids, and amino acids. Peristalsis moves nutrients through digestive system.
Ileum: Absorb bile salts,vitamin B12 and leftover products of jejunum.
Large intestine has following sections –
Ascending colon: Absorb remaining water and other nutrients from indigestible material and solidifying it to stool.
Transverse colon: It moves waste material to rectum through peristalsis and churning. Absorb water and electrolytes.
Descending colon: Store remains of digested food which is emptied into the rectum.
Sigmoid colon: Terminal section, connects descending colon to rectum; store fecal waste until ready to leave.
Rectum: Temporary storage site for fecal matter.
