Question: What type of organism alternates between a trophozoite and a cyst?
Also, What is the difference between these two forms?
Protozoans like giardia, entamoeba, etc alternate their life cycle between trophozoite and a cyst.
Difference:
Cyst: Cyst is the infectious resistant stage of the protozoans. They are oval or circular structure. They contain secretory vesicles. They posses resistant cell wall for protection under harsh environment. Excystation (removing of cyst) is observed. They don't posses flagella.
Trophozoite: Trophozoite is the feeding, multiplying stage of the protozoans. They are elongated ,pear shaped structure. Karyosome and median bodies are present. No dormant stage is observed. No excystation and they posses flagella. They are larger than the cysts.
