Extensive degradation of which following amino acid will lead to generation of ketone body?
A. Serine
B. Lysine
C. Alanine
D. Ardinine

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Option B- Lysine

The amino acids can be classified into two as Ketogenic amino acids and Glucogenic amino acids. The Glucogenic amino acids can be converted into Pyruvate or Citric acid cycle intermediates and can synthesis glucose from these using the gluconeogenesis pathway, whereas the ketogenic amino acids can be converted into ketone bodies. Lysine and Leucine are the examples for ketogenic amino acids and the remaining amino acids are glucogenic amino acids.
