A chemical spills at work, and you read the label to find that its LD50 is a very high value. Do you panic? Why or why not?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

No need to panic

LD50 means  Lethal Dose 50%. This is the amount of the substance needed for killing 50% of the test sample. It is used to compare the hazards effect of various chemicals.

A very high LD50 means a very high amount of the chemical is needed to kill 50% of the organism. That is, a chemical with a very high LD50 is relatively non-toxic or harmless (Eg.1,000 to 5,000 mg/kg) . Therefore if a chemical with very high LD50 valuspills at work, there is no need to panic. However, a chemical is with very low LD50, means the chemical at very small concentrations (Eg. 5 mg/kg) is harmful.
