Discuss how genes affect population

Discuss how genes affect population

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • Genes are functional segments of DNA and genetic variation or variation in genes always exist in nature.
  • Certain genes may confer a selective advantage to a population, like higher growth rate. Such genes may be involved in metabolism or such activities.
  • On the other hand, certain genes may be disadvantageous and have a negative effect on the growth of population.
  • For example, if a gene contains a lethal mutation and is passed on , may have deleterious effects on the population.
  • In short, genes may either increase or decrease the population growth rate, depending on the function served by the gene.
