Lactose is a disaccharide. Disaccharide is a type of sugar formed by the joining of two monosaccharides which are joined together by the glycosidic bond. The disaccharide lactose is formed by two monosaccharides which are glucose and galactose.
Lactose is absorbed by the cells of our small intestine only when it is broken down by an enzyme called lactase. This enzyme( produced by the cells of the small intestine) breaks down lactose in glucose and galactose which are then absorbed by the cells of the small intestine.
