As they say prevention is better than cure.Vaccination prepares the body for the infection or the antigens with an added advantage of boosting the immunity.In terms of cost efficiency also, vaccination is better than treatment for any disease.

HIV maintains a latent viral reservoir.

In HIV,the viral DNA infects the host's cells and the host's cells starts making more viral DNA and infects helper T cells.A small population of infected cells go into the latent phase which is known as provirus.Antiviral drugs can protect the new cells from getting infected and killed but they don't have any effect on these proviruses.Thus these drugs can stop the progression of HIV but cannot completely cure the disease.
