Bacitracin, Novobiocin, Optochin sensitivity: Describe what reaction there would be for the bacteria, Staphylococcus epidermidis
Answer: Bacitracin, Novobiocin, and Optochin sensitivity test is used to differentiate different species of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria. The bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis is novobiocin sensitive and hence can not grow in the media that contain this antibiotic. It inhibits DNA gyrase and ATPase enzyme, leading to cell death. So, Novobiocin Sensitivity reaction would be there for Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Bacitracin and Optochin is used to differentiate different species of Streptococcus bacteria but not for Staphylococcus bacteria.
