Bacitracin, Novobiocin, Optochin sensitivity: Describe what reaction there would be for the bacteria, Staphylococcus epidermidis

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer: Bacitracin, Novobiocin, and Optochin sensitivity test is used to differentiate different species of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria. The bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis is novobiocin sensitive and hence can not grow in the media that contain this antibiotic. It inhibits DNA gyrase and ATPase enzyme, leading to cell death. So, Novobiocin Sensitivity reaction would be there for Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Bacitracin and Optochin is used to differentiate different species of Streptococcus bacteria but not for Staphylococcus bacteria.

You have isolated a clinical sample and carried out a gram stain on the bacteria in hopes to identify what is causing the illness in your patient. The gram stain showed a gram-positive staphylococcus. You have narrowed down the possible bacteria to only those used in this lab. What are the possible bacteria that you have isolated? Bacteria are the most common cause of sepsis, with 62.2% of patients with positive blood cultures harboring Gram-negative bacteria and 46.8% infected with Gram-positive bacteria. This overlap can be explained by polymicrobial sepsis, which is frequently simulated in mouse models. While Escherichia coli can be found in approximately 1 in 6 culture-positive patients, Gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have made up an increasing percentage of sepsis with the advent of excessive antibiotic treatment. Now, you collected blood...
