Coagulase Test is used to
differentiate between organisms that produce Coagulase and
organisms that do not produce coagulase.
Ex: Staphylococcus aureus (positive)
Staphylococcus epidermis and Staphylococcus
saprophyticus (negative)
Principle:
Coagulase converts fibrinogen to fibrin thereby forming a clot.
Procedure:
Place a drop of Saline on a slide and add the bacterial culture
using a loop. Add a drop of human/rabbit plasma and mix gently. If
the given organism is coagulase-positive, clumping occurs within 10
seconds.
