Answer #1

Triaxial test:-

Question (1).

Option (a) is correct for this question. Beacause the unconfined compression test is a special form of a triaxial test in which the confining pressure is zero. The test can be conducted only on clayey soils which can stand without confinement. The test is generally performed on non - fissured saturated clay specimens. Although the test can be conducted in a triaxial test appartus as UU test , it is more convenient to perform it.

Question (2).

Option (2) is correct for this question. Because on the basis of shera strength , soils can be divided into three types.

A. Cohesionless soils

B. Purely cohesive soils

C. Cohesive - frictional soils

Purely cohesive soils:- These are the soils which exhibit cohesion but the angle of shearing resistance phi () = 0 , For example, saturated clays and silts under unconsolidated undrained conditions.
