1. According to Bronsted-Lowry, a chemical species that donate proton is known as acid and a chemical species that accept proton is known as base.

2. Bronsted-Lowry acid should contain proton for dissociation of proton and base should have electronegative atom whose lone pair of electrons attracts and forms bond with proton.

3. For example when nitric acid reacts with water, nitric acid acts as acid that donates proton and water acts as nase that accepts proton.

HNO3 + H2O NO3- + H3O+

when nitric acid donates its proton, it acts as Bronsted-Lowry acid and gets converted into NO3- and then water accepts proton, acts as Bronsted-Lowry base and converted into H3O+.
