According to the bronsted lowry concept , acid donates hydrogen ion and base accepts hydrogen ion .

The balanced Reaction showing all these species is :

NH3 (aq) + H2O (l) = NH4+ (aq) + OH- (aq)

The water molecule acts as bronsted lowry acid as it donates hydrogen ion and ammonia molecule acts as proton donor , hence it is Bronsted lowry base .

Ammonium ion is formed as a resukt of acceptance of proton , hence is called as conjugate acid and hydroxyl ions is formed from water molecule by losing a proton , hence it is called as conjugate base .
