why does a false positive result in an ELISA test happen in some patients but not others
A false-positive test result is one that appears to detect a diseasewhen in fact it is not present. In ELISA, false positives happen due to the interference of heterophilic antibodies in the patients samples. Heterophilic antibodies are antibodies that are able to binds to animal antibodies used in the assay. It includes Human anti mouse anitbodies (HAMA) which is the most common one.
HAMA is produced in the pateints body due to various reasons including Monoclonal antibody therapy for treating cancers, exposure to foreign proteins incase of farm workers, food preparers etc. Presence of domestic animals in the environment, blood transfusion , dialysis etc.
