c) Athletes with chronic energy deficit (energy output>energy intake; strenuous exercisers) tend to have high levels of cortisol. Do you expect their immune systems would be better than those who are sedentary?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Cortisol is also called stress hormone . It is released from zona fasciculata layer of adrenal cortex.

Cortisol has anti inflammatory property therefore act as immunity booster in short term .

But if its level remains high for a long time the it causes downregulation of cortisol receptors and hence lowers down the immunity.

In contrast in sedentary lifestyle the level of cortisol always remain too high which makes the person feel more craving for food and lethargy.

Too much raised level ir cortisol leads to suppression of immunity and predisposes to many diseases.

Therefore overall immunity of an athlete is far better than a person with sedentary lifestyle.

1. Assume your blood has a pH of 7.4 and you have been producing urine with a pH of 7.4 for a while. You drive to very high altitude (ca. 4,000 m) and spend several hours there. Your alveolar ventilation rate increases (as expected), and eventually this causes your blood pH to rise above 7.4 (your blood plasma becomes more basic than normal). \newline This change in blood pH will initiate compensatory homeostatic mechanisms in your kidneys ("renal compensation") that...

Cholera and other diarrheal diseases cause nearly 2 billion cases of diarrhea annually. Cholera toxin and other bacterial toxins cause the intestine to secrete fluid into the lumen of the gut, depleting the extracellular fluid (ECF) volume. If fluid loss is not matched with fluid intake (law of mass balance), the result is severe dehydration, circulatory collapse, and even death. Drinking a rehydration solution is the most rapid and effective way to replace the large volumes of water lost by...
