Children that suffering from attention deficient disorder may have a high level of energy but a low level of attention span. The other symptoms that are associated with "Attention Deficit Disorder or ADHD are, inattention, impulsiveness, a low tolerance for frustration, and generally a great deal of inappropriate behavior." (Feldman) At one time or another, most children will display one or more of these traits but if you are a child that has been diagnosed with ADHD, you can not control these urges. These children will typically get in trouble often, in school and out in public. Although drugs are often prescribed to treat ADHD, there are alternative therapies that parents, teachers and children can turn to instead. These therapies include behavior techniques that "parents and teachers learn that primarily use rewards (such as verbal praise) to improve behavior." (Feldman) These techniques might be even more effective in the classroom where teachers can gently increase the activity levels in the classroom. Behavior therapy might be enhanced by encouraging children to keep active when not in school. Such activities might include sports or exercise. Parents should also encourage friendships with their child peers. This might help to keep each child busy and active, in a positive manner. My advice for parents that are looking to keep their child medication free could also reach out to other parents and support groups. This type of support might help families gain a different perspective or alternative ideas on how to cope. They might also act as a sounding board for parents that don't know where to turn to help their child.
IN 7-8 LINES WHAT DO YOU AGREE WITH PAGE AND HOW WOULD YOU COMMENT?
I agree with the line of treatment proposed. The children suffering from attention deficit disorder have high energy levels and lack attention, impulsive and generally a lot of inappropriate behavior that in most cases can be handled with behavior therapy. Only in cases that have some physiological symptom should be given medicine. In other cases, long-term behavior therapy can manage the difficulties the child is facing. Most psychiatric drugs make the patient dependent and have side effects. In the case of a child who has a long life in front of him or her, avoiding the drug is an advisable approach.
Besides behavior therapy and reward approach, I would also suggest paying attention to the diet of the child. Slowly all the junk food and chocolates should be removed from the diet of the kid. The diet should include fresh fruits and vegetables. The diet should be high in fiber.
