Presence of keratin and glycolipids on stratum corneum acts as protective barrier and prevents water loss from skin. These keratin and glycolipids also acts as barrier against bacteria, viruses, fungi, ultra violet rays, heat, chemicals and toxins. Sebaceous gland secretes sebum which is acidic in nature and this acts as a barrier for microbes and prevents it's entry in the skin. Sweat glands secretes sweat which consists a chemical having antibiotic properties called as dermicidin which kills the microbes on skin surface and prevents it's penetration in skin. Skin also has Langerhans cells which plays role in providing immunity.
