Forced vital capacity is the amount of air that can be exhaled out of lungs after a maximum inspiration.
normal value for males (20-60yrs) = 5.5 to 4.75 liters

normal values for females (20-60yrs) = 3.75 to 3.25 liters.
Forced expiratory volume in 1 sec is the volume of air forcefully exhaled in 1 second after a maximum inspiration.
Normal values for males (20-60yrs)=4.5 to 3.5 liters
normal values for females (20-60yrs) = 3.25 to 2.5 liters.
The ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 sec to forced vital capacity is the fev1/fvc.
fev1/fvc ratio is decreased obstructive lung diseases such as asthma,COPD.
In restrictive lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis the fev1/fvc remains normal or may increase.
Normal value of fev1/fvc should be 70-85%
