Adaptive immunity which occurs once the body is exposed, either via a pathogen or vaccine, to an antigen. Adaptive immunity has memory and is much more particular to antigen as compared to innate immunity. When the innate immune response is insufficient to eradicate pathogen and control infection, Adaptive immunity is activated at that time. the adaptive response could not occur without getting information from the innate immune system.

The two types of adaptive responses are mentioned below:

  1. Cell-mediated immune response - Controlled by T cells
  2. Humoral immune response - Controlled by B cells and antibodies

Adaptive immunity provides long term protection to host from same type of pathogen by keeping a memory. In case of re-exposure of same pathogen, the memory will lead to quick and effective response.
