An agricultural field trial compares the yield of two varieties of corn. The researchers divide in half each of 17 fields of land in different locations and plant each corn variety in one half of each plot. After harvest, the yields are compared in bushels per acre at each location. The 17 differences (Variety A - Variety B) give x¯=3.98 and s=3.64. Does this sample provide evidence that Variety A had a higher yield than Variety B?

(a) State the null and alternative hypotheses: (Type "mu" for the symbol μ , e.g. mu > 1 for the mean is greater than 1, mu < 1 for the mean is less than 1, mu not = 1 for the mean is not equal to 1)

H0 :

Ha :

(b) Find the test statistic, t =

(c) Answer the question: Does this sample provide evidence that Variety A had a higher yield than Variety B? (Use a 5% level of significance) (Type: Yes or No)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given difference of mean S= 3.64

H0 : μ ( difference of population mean A&B)=0

Ha : μ >0 that is Variety A had a higher yield than Variety B.

(b) The test statistic,

The test statistic t = 4.508

p value = 0.000179

Conclusion:   p value 0.000179 <0.05 Reject H0

This sample provide evidence that Variety A had a higher yield than Variety B at 5% level of significance

an agricultural researcher plants 25 plots with a new variety of corn. The mean yield for these plots is 150 bushels per acre. assume that the yield per acre for the new variety of corn follows a normal distribution with standard deviation 10 bushels. use the given information to test if the unknown population mean yield is different than 153 bushels at a significance level 3%

New varieties of corn with altered amino acid content may have higher nutritional value than standard corn, which is low in the amino acid lysine. An experiment compares two new varieties, called opaque-2 and oury-2, with normal corn. The researchers mix cornsoybean meal diets using each type of corn at each of three protein levels: 12% protein, 16% protein, and 20% protein. They feed each diet to 10 one-day-old male chicks and record their weight gains after 21 days. The...

Happy Harvest Bread Company needs to determine whether a new advertising campaign has increased its mean daily income. The daily income for 50 randomly selected business days prior to campaign was recorded. After the advertising campaign, the income for another 30 randomly selected days was recorded.     Let probability of making a type I error be 1%. Do these data provide sufficient evidence for the management to conclude that the mean income has changed by the advertising campaign? A summary of the...
