A researcher is interested in gender differences in attitudes toward dating. Specifically, she wants to test the hypothesis that women are more accepting than men are of the idea that men should always pay on the first date, and thus women should have a more traditional view of dating than men do. Data are collected from 10 women and 10 men using a scale that measures dating behaviours and attitudes. A score of 0 means that they have very nontraditional views of dating, a score of 50 means they contain some nontraditional and some traditional views of dating, and a score of 100 indicates they have very traditional views of dating.

  1. What are the independent and dependent variables of this study?
  2. What are the scales of measurement for each variable? Explain your answers.
  3. What is the appropriate statistical test for this study? Explain your answer.

Answer #1

(a)

the independent variable of this study: dating behaviours and attitudes.

(b)

the dependent variables of this study: gender differences (Women and Men)

(c)

Scale of measurement of the independent variable of this study: dating behaviours and attitudes.: Ordinal, since the values are ranked.

Scale of measurement of the dependent variables of this study: gender differences (Women and Men): Nominal since the values are only names: Women and Men.

(d)

The appropriate statistical test for this study : Chi Square Test of Independence. since in the experimentation, we have categorical variables from a single population and the reseach question is to determine whether there is a significant association between the two variables.

In one test, 20 women and 21 men were placed in a room in which there were a number of objects. Later, they were asked to recall the objects in the room and where they were. Women remembered an...
