4. There has long been an analogy between hypothesis testing and court proceedings. Explain how the presumption of innocence during a trial could possibly be related to hypothesis testing in statistics.

Answer #1

In testing of hypothesis we take a null hypothesis which is in neutral manner( i.e, unbiased)

That means we take null hypothesis as no change in difference.. If we want to reject null hypothesis we need to have sufficient evidence against it in our sample.

Likewise court trail take a person not guilty during the trail period.. If that is to be rejected then we need to have sufficient evidence against that person.

In testing of hypothesis we have two type of errors. Type 1 error is , we rejecting null hypothesis but actually it is true. Type two error is we accepting null hypothesis but it is actually wrong.

Similarly there is a chance of aquittal (accepting innocent) but actually the person is guilty which related to type two error of testing of hypothesis. And there is a chance for rejecting the person is innocent actually the person is innocent which relates type one error of testing of hypothesis

Erythromycin is a drug that has been proposed to possibly lower the risk of premature delivery. A related area of interest is its association with the incidence of side effects during pregnancy. Assume that 30% of all pregnant women complain of nausea between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. Furthermore, suppose that of 178 women who are taking erythromycin regularly during this period, 63 complain of nausea. Find the p-value for testing the hypothesis that incidence rate of nausea...

Listening to music has long been thought to enhance intelligence, especially during infancy and childhood. To test whether this is true, a researcher records the number of hours that eight high-performance students listened to music per day for 1 week. The data are listed in the table. Music Listening per Day (in hours) 3.6 4.2 5.9 4.7 3.9 4.4 5.0 5.2 Suppose the null hypothesis states that students listen to 3.5 hours of music per day. Conduct a one-sample t-test...

TESTING DRUGS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD The drug development process is long, risky, and expensive. It can take ten years and cost in excess of $500 million to develop a new drug. Moreover, between 80 and 90 percent of drug candidates fail in clinical trials. Pharmaceutical companies rely upon a handful of successes to pay for their failures. Among the most successful of the world's pharmaceutical companies is New York–based Pfizer. Developing a new drug involves risks and costs, and...
