Borderline Personality Disorder ( BPD) is one of the psychiatric illness which is marked by an ongoing patter of changing moods, self-image and behaviours. These symptoms often lead to anger, impulsive actions, depression, and anxiety that go on for hours to days. It creates issues with relationships and even daily routine work of the patient and family.
Significant development factors include family history, brain changes like structural and functional changes in the brain especially in the areas that control impulses and emotional regulation, and environmental, social and cultural events like some traumatic event, abandonment or adversity during childhood.
Impairment in identity is a distinguishing feature of BPD. BPD patients oen moment will feel that they are successful and other moment they may become self harming. Sense of self is different which make them behave differently in similar situations at different times.
Culture does impact rate of occurence of BPD. Fo example, research has found that BPD is more prevalent in developed countries. Hectic and busy lives may be a reason for it.
