Assess the value of Bowlby’s findings for Early Childhood Development.

Like Freud Bowlby states that behaviour in the adulthood is the result of problems faced in childhood. Bowlby's stated that attachement to chid is important which shapes his later life, such as primary bond developed between the child and the mother. In his maternal deprivation theory he also suggested that failure to intiate or the breakdown of thematernal attachment has serious consequences, the lon term deprivation may have effects such as delinquency, reduced intelligence, increased aggression, depression.
Together Bowlby and Robertson stated that three kinds of progressive distress which can arise in child due to short term seperation. The three progressive stages of distress are:
1) Protest - The child screams, shouts when the parent leaves 2) Despair - The child's protest begin to stop and he appears to calmer but still upset refuses to participate in anything. 3) Detachment - If the child seperation continues the child will cintinue to find his attachment in some other thing or the person, they will show the signs of anger when the caregiver returns.
