In DSM V, Communication disorders are given under
neurodevelopmental disorders.These include deficits in language,
speech, and communication.The five distinct categories of
communication disorders are -
- language disorder - difficulty in production or comprehension
of language across all modalities.
- speech sound disorder -deficit in phonological knowledge of
speech sounds or the ability to coordinate movements required for
speech.
- childhood-onset fluency disorder (stuttering) -persistent
disturbance in the normal fluency and time patterning of speech ,
inappropriate according to the age.
- social (pragmatic) communication disorder -difficulty in verbal
and non verbal social communication
- specified and unspecified communication disorders
