Some neurologists speculate that if we live long enough sooner or later, everyone would eventually develop Parkinson’s disease. Why do you think that might be?

Parkinson’s disease is one of the progressive diseases of the central nervous system, which means that the disease would be becoming worse with time. This disease occurs since the cells gradually begin to lose the ability of producing the chemical dopamine. As the amount of dopamine would decrease, there would be some or the other general symptoms of the disease. A person might to display emotional change or begin to get worried or start feeling depressed. Some researchers speculate that if we live long enough sooner or later, everyone would eventually develop Parkinson’s disease because the ability of the cells to produce dopamine would reduce greatly.

You’ve just been hired by HSARPA to develop some potential ideas for technology to assist with homeland security. Your job has no directives or limitations – you are just to think about problems that exist, and potential ways that technology can solve them, no matter how far-fetched, how much they may cost, or how long they would take to implement. Part 1) Imagine we conduct a study to determine how long it takes salesclerks to approach and help hearing-disabled customers. If differences do emerge between these two IV levels, can we say confidently that the differences are due to deafness, or might there be another variable at play (like chance) that better accounts for any observed differences? Think of two factors that account for why helping times might differ between conditions (other than deafness vs. hearing) Part 2) Why is...

For the critical thinking question: Why can’t we think long term? Well, we can of course, but short-term thinking is much more common and seems to have more influence in our behavior. People would not do things that have a long-term negative effect if we could be more rational. As your book notes, various chemicals in the brain signal pleasure, or in some cases, displeasure. For instance, the pleasure of a donut is countered in part by the displeasure of...

Imagine you are living in the 1400s and, as most people did then, you live off of the land. You raise cows, sheep, goats, etc., to provide food and clothing. Limited money exchange is available, most commonly in the form of silver and gold coins, though you most often barter for goods using what you could raise, grow, or build. Think of some kind of common activity you might be planning or you might need to do in the course...
