I came across this bill introduced in the state of Rhode Island. In short, it will require that when a judge “of color” vacates a seat it will be filled by another judge “of color.” WHile understandable they would like to keep the bench representative of demographics, is making a law the right way to do it? Could this be seen negatively?
This shouldn't be seen in negative way, as to keep up the democratic values its essential that each group of the society should be represented equally. As the demographic features of Rhode islands indicate a white dominance, it's necessary for people of color to have their representative in judiciary, so that they could have representative who understands their core issues being one among them.
The other side of this issue is that it denotes a division in the society. It still reminds the deep roots of racism in the society. It indicates how we still haven't gone beyond thinking ourselves in racial terms. It calls for a change of thinking in a human perspective in which there is trust and mutual cooperation for progress and development, for building a a race free healthy society.
