Four disadvantages and three advantages to selective incapacitation. And examples to support the reason.
Disadvantages
1. Selective incapacitation is based on prediction, so, it may go
wrong as we are dealing with human beings and not machines.
2. There is no guarantee that someone who is given less term in
jail will behave well as the behavior will still be inside the
person and create a mindset that the person could get away with
that.
3. The society's safety will be under question as the offenders
walk free on the street as the chances are more that they may
repeat the behavior.
4. The chances are more that the officials might select people who
they favour and thus creating race, ethnic and class tensions.
Advantages
1. There will be less number of prisons and this will bring down
the administrative cost of running the prison facility.
2. People who committed some crimes out of emotional outburst need
not stay behind the bars for long time.
3. The prisons only make people worse as the entire environment
will be negative inside, so, if minor offenders are kept out with a
warning, future gangs will be prevented from forming.
