Late adulthood is a stage in life where the dynamics of relationships quite change. For instance, Maria has lost her sisters, she also lost some friends. Her son wants her to leave the neighborhood and come live with him in another state. With the move to another state has left her feeling emotionally vulnerable. Every individual thrives on some kind of relationship, closeness or at least have somebody to talk to whose wavelength matches with theirs. Maria is left with an extremely low-self esteem. She feels she is not mobile, she cannot do anything. She cannot even go out to make friends. She just feels very lonely. Her self-concept is also affected because her son and daughter in law are often heard saying, 'Mother has become old, she cannot any longer do much'. This affects Maria because other view her immobile as well which in turn affects her self-esteem.
An older person's self-esteem and self-concept can be boosted by enrolling them to nearby old-member clubs or parks for recreational activities, where they would find people of their age who would understand them. They would be more active and mobile and feel like they alone can take the world down. These strategies could help boost an older person's self-concept and self-esteem.
