How and why is adaptive behavior used when determining intelligence?
General intelligence of a person can be determined by their adaptive behaviour. Adaptive behaviour indicates the behaviour or mannerisms of a person while doing his day to day activities like talking, walking, running, laughing, etc. Adaptive behaviour traits are used to examine intelligence in fundamental level. These normal day to day activities say a lot about a person. For example, a mentally retarded person cannot perform his everyday activities effectively and hence lacks intelligence. A person with ADHD will show a different pattern than a person with dyslexia. Hence these intelligence related problems can be easily diagnosed by observing adaptive behaviour.
