when is aquatic surface resperation used, and why is it an advantagous behavior??
Aquatic surface respiration is an adaptive process of fishes during hypoxia condition in water or when there is a drastic fall in dissolved oxygen level. Mostly seen in tropical freshwater fishes , during hypoxia fishes come up to the surface of water and at the top layer of water fishe ventilates due to higher dissolved oxygen level at top layer.
This mechanism helps in their survival in extreme hypoxia and helpful to enhance their survival rate during this harsh condition.
