1. The nature and the nurture debate argues whether human development is determined by innate genetic and hereditary predispositions (nature) or by the environmentalal context under which an individual grows (nurture).

2. The continuity versus stage models debate whether human development should be considered in terms of a single, continuous process that occurs throughout the lifespan of the individual (continuity) or in terms of distinct stages characterised by unique developmental changes.

3. The stability versus change perspectives consider whether fundamental behaviours and traits acquired during childhood remain stable throughout an individual’s life span (stability) or individual characteristics are cloud and mills themselves according to situations.
