Likert Scales

Likert scales have an odd number of choices/responses (5, 7, 9, etc)

Likert scales have a 'neutral' at the center of the responses and symmetrically positive and negative responses on either side

LIkert scales include labels - at least at the extremes, often at every step
e.g., strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree
e.g., always, often, sometimes, rarely, never

Items should be strongly worded statements

Items should not be double-barreled

'Reverse worded' items mean that as a participant responds to a list of items, they will sometimes choose 'strongly agree' and sometimes choose 'strongly disagree' to indicate the same information.

EXAMPLE: Below are 2 items, each with 5 response options.

I am comfortable in large groups (SA) (A) (N) (D) (SD)
I feel nervous around groups of people (SA) (A) (N) (D) (SD)

The Relationship Between State Agencies and Nonprofit Organizations Introduction The relationship between government agencies and nonprofit organizations is the focus of increasing attention within the public administration community. Practitioners recognize that the organization of public services relies to a substantial degree upon what we have come to call third-party government (Salamon, 1981). Nongovernmental actors not only deliver government-funded services but also actively participate throughout the policy process. Often the third-party is a nonprofit organization. In the last decade or so,...

For this week’s discussion, I want you to discuss with your group what you think this study is about. What is the hypothesis? What theory does it come from? What do you predict will happen (do you expect something different than the hypothesis in the researcher instructions? If so, what and why?)? Do you think...
