Why do we not want non-pathogenic bacterium to become resistant to antibiotics or antimicrobial agents? Should we not instead only focus on pathogenic bacteria?
No it is not desirable to just focus on pathogenic bacteria because when we administer antibiotic to non pathogenic bacteria, it will encourage the growth of non pathogenic bacteria which are antibiotic resistant. This will increase the reservoir of resistant trait in overall population and this increases the odds of transferring resistance gene to the pathogenic bacteria. So, that will be a very undesirable situation and that is why we should not just focus on pathogenic bacteria..
