Based on archaeological evidence human inhabitants first settled in the Amazon region at least 11,200 years ago.People depended primarily on wild foods for subsistence.Their strategies have been very diverse, depending greatly upon the local environment; it also have included hunting or trapping big game, hunting or trapping smaller animals, fishing, gathering shellfish or insects, and gathering wild plant foods such as fruits, vegetables,seeds, and nuts. Most hunters and gatherers combine a variety of these strategies in order to ensure a balanced diet.Agriculture may thus have been brought about first by women.Men often continued to hunt or make war.
