Why do antidepressants downregulate beta 2 and 5-HT2 receptors?
Most antidepressants are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that rapidly block serotonin (5-HT) reuptake. Imbalances in the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) are largely responsible for the symptoms of depression. Serotonin is also known to control the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine, which also contribute to the symptoms of depression. Antidepressants increase the levels of serotonin by blocking the reuptake at the synapses.
Most therapists choose SSRIs because they have fewer side effects and are usually well tolerated, despite the fact that the effects of the medication take a few weeks to show results.
