The ACM Code of Ethics has as one of its general moral imperatives “Honor property rights, including copyrights and patents.” If you were an ACM member within the European Union, where no patents for software exist, would you be required by the code to honor a U.S. patent for a particular piece of software? Explain.
Honesty is about being truthful to things which one is expected to but integrity is exhibiting honesty at all times. Section 1.3 of ACM suggests that one should be honest and trustworthy. So, honouring property rights including copy rights and patents doesn’t mean only where the codes are applicable but also everywhere, especially as the member of ACM. It would be one of their goals to promote ACM’s principles as the member of ACM. So, wherever I am, I should follow the ethics and that would show my integrity.
