men faced a great deal of anxiety and anger concerning their masculine identities that inks solidly with large changes in the economy. changes in the economy and the inability of men to maintain their earning power seems to be the most important reason for the increased anxiety about masculinity in the last generation or so. Do you agree with this argument, and why or why not?
I do not agree with this argument. In my opinion, concepts of masculinity and femininity are becoming more fluid with the coming generations. Today, there is a lot more acceptance of men having identities that do not strictly adhere to the established gender norms, and consequently encouraging openness and expression of the same. It is difficult to imagine that in such an environment, men are feeling anxious about their identities unless the statement is backed with scientific research. Another aspect that I want to highlight is that gender inequality is very much a reality in the economy as well, so one needs to analyse exactly what type of “changes” are being talked about that is rendering men unable to maintain their position.
