Free riding refers to the phenomenon in which individuals benefit from a collective good without contributing or participating in its production. Free riding has several potential unfavourable consequences that negatively impact work product, damage professional relationships and contaminate workplace culture. However, free riding can be prevented using certain techniques. Teams should be kept small and should comprise of 3-5 members. In case there is a need to expand the group size, the team can be broken down into smaller sub-groups. Next, each member should be assigned a specific and distinct task, and hold them accountable for its completion. An effective way to do so is by classifying project components into specific buckets.
