Answer #1

1. Social loafing is the tendency for people to exert less effort on a task when working in a group than when working on the same task alone. Dr Juliana can take the following steps to reduce social loafing:

  • She can make the efforts of each group member identifiable. This has a tendency to reduce social loafing. Members can be asked to list their specific contributions.
  • Increasing the value of the task. If the task holds a greater value, members are less likely to loaf. Thus, if the group project constitutes a major chunk of one's final grades, social loafing will reduce.
  • Dr Juliana can reduce social loafing by forming teams in a way that each individual has something unique to contribute. If members feel irreplaceable, they are less likely to loaf.
