This week one of the things that you thought about was the argument from mystical experiences for believing in God. This argument says that you can know that God exists simply by having an experience of Him in your heart. What do you think of this? Is it plausible or implausible?
I find this explanation highly implausible. If we were to use our imaginative abilities, it is possible for us to conceptualise any creature or concept. For the sake of this argument, let’s assume that a girl believes, with all conviction, that rainbow-coloured unicorns exist. From this line of reasoning, does her belief that comes to her without any doubt, imply that such a creature is infact a reality? We can extend this argument further by considering a man who has consumed psychedelic drugs or who is having a hallucination induced by schizophrenia. The argument that one can be certain that God exists simple by having an experience of him/her does not make sense to me.
