Using and enhancing one's resources to pursue one's goals is known as goal pursuit. It is a process involving four stages namely predecisional, preactional, actional and postactional. Predecisional is the task of selecting between two coinciding desires, which then triggers goal-directed actions and activates the preactional stage. Actional is the process of performing necessary actions in order to reach fruitful culmination. The last stage or the postactional stage relates to the analysis of ones achievements with respect to what was targeted earlier.
Motivation and persistence are the essential concepts related to goal pursuit. Differences between one's present condition and one's desired targets, lead to tension. The motivational or driving force to terminate discrepancy removes tension, resulting in persistence or continuity towards the set goals.
