Iconic memory is short term memory that is visual, probably fleeting images that unlike long term memory, is forgotten within a couple of milliseconds. An example of an iconic memory is surveying the room for objects that are on the floor and seeing the position of things in the room. Once the eyes are shut, one no longer remembers, which is an example of iconic memory.

Echoic memory is related to sensory memory which is specific to auditory information. The auditory cannot be scanned repeatedly, unlike visual stimuli. Overall, they last for slightly longer periods than iconic memory, but is capable of storing large amounts of information. An example of echoic memory is hearing someones name called out loudly, someone you dont know and forgetting it seconds later.
