AUD is Alcohol Use Disorder. In DSM- IV alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence were described as two different disorders with different criteria. However in DSM-5 these two disorders have been combined under AUD i.e. Alcohol Use Disorder.
DSM-5 eliminated legal problem as a criteria and added craving as a symptoms in its 11 symptoms.
Presence of at least two symptoms can be regarded as AUD. Based on the number of systems person experience, it has been graded as mild, moderate and severe.
Symptoms include taking larger amount of alcohol for a longer period of time, having strong desire to use alcohol, engaging into activities which are necessary to obtain and use of alcohol, persistently consumption of alcohol even one is aware about its hazardous effects on physical and mental health, having desire to cut down it however not able to do the same. Etc.
