1 in 3 women globally will experience physical, sexual or psychological violence during their lifetimes, most often at the hands of a partner. Identify the underlying causes of violence. What is the role of gender hierarchies and power inequalities in perpetuating violence, locally and/or globally? Reflect on possible solutions.
Women were for long been the subject of domestic and social violence which is evident from the olden day wars when the soldiers from the winning army rape the women from the country that they defeated. For a long time women were treated as the slaves of men and they were used for sex, bearing children and looking after the household choirs. Women were denied all their rights such as education, property, voting etc. Men are naturally aggressive and they want to show their superiority over women. When women started gaining more economic independence, they were also looking for equal treatment and this caused men to react badly rather than accepting women as equals. This violence differs between cultures and races. Men should understand that everyone is same in this world. Men need to accept and agree that women can do all the jobs that men do. Women shouldn’t be treated as weak but as a complementary sex. Men who commit crimes against women should be punished hard. Men should be guided by the parents and the society to treat women equally.
