What are the 3 major themes in Carl Jung's theory

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Jung conceptualized the psyche to be comprised of three distinct but related systems, namely, the ego, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious. According to Jung, the ego represents the conscious mind as it consists of the thoughts, memories, and emotions that an individual is aware of. The ego is largely responsible for the perception of the self, identity, and continuity. At the same time, unconscious forces also played a significant role in the psyche and comprised of two layers.  The first layer, called the personal unconscious, contains repressed conflicts, feelings and memories. The second level is the collective unconscious and is the part of the psyche which is shared with other members of the human species, It comprises of latent memories from our ancestral and evolutionary past.
